Database Development

Databases have two purposes; to store data in a logical and structured way and to allow information to be gathered from the data.

Many companies have their IT data scattered across a number of sources.  Spreadsheets, office documents, contacts and other source which are usually unlinked.

Databases allow you to store your information in a highly structured way.  When designed correctly, databases will enforce your business rules to ensure that the integrity of data remains secure.

What software & equipment do I need to run a database

Databases are essentially software programs that handle data (these are known as database engines).  There are numerous database engines on the market with pros and cons depending upon the purpose of the database.

We develop our databases using Microsoft SQL Server; a powerful and fully featured database engine.  SQL Server is one of the most popular database engines in use today.

Depending upon your situation, you may or may not need a server to allow your database to operate.  The Express Edition of SQL Server operates equally well on a server or a standard desktop computer.
If you have a large number of users or a large amount of database activity, we would recommend that you purchase a server.
Microsoft Windows Small Business Server Premium Edition provides the Standard Edition of SQL Server which is more than adequate for most companies.

 How are databases developed?

During the initial stage of the development we thoroughly investigate your current information stores and business practices to gain a thorough understanding of your requirements.

The construction of your database then begins.  Normally an interface to the database is developed to allow you to add, edit and delete information from the database.
These systems are normally Windows applications or Web applications depending upon your requirements (a combination of both technologies is also common).

I already have a database, what happens then?

Even if you already have a database developed using a different database engine, we have a number of tools that can allow two systems to interact.

Alternatively we can migrate your existing database to a new more reliable system.
